  • Notify all regular services such as Security Company, gardening etc. of your vacating date. Also notify the post office and all publications (magazines, newsletters, journals) of your new address and your date of move.
  • Make arrangements to collect all advanced deposits or security deposits on utilities or rentals.
  • Check the balance on your homeowner insurance. You might be able to apply all prepaid balance to your new residence. Make sure your insurance carrier covers your new house immediately.
  • Transfer all school records to your child’s new school and complete the registration.
  • Consider which plants will go with you and which will not. Remember that movers will not take plants so you will need to fit them in your car or take them with you in any other way you will travel.
  • Make sure your pet is ready for the move. Consult with your veterinarian as to the best way to move your pet.
  • Check your club memberships. Find out if you can transfer your membership to a branch in your new area. If not then try getting a refund of if allowed transfer/ sell your membership to a friend.
At least two weeks before you move:
     
  • Notify your utility companies of your move and confirm with them the exact date when they should disconnect your services. Contact the utility services in your destination area and set a date with them to start service at your new home. Remember that any period of time with out utilities can cost you money in hotel bills and food expenses.
  • Don’t forget to clean out all school and gym lockers.
  • Get a referral from your current doctors to doctors and dentists in your new area. Arrange the transfer of all your medical records and make copies of any prescriptions. If someone in your family is undergoing any ongoing therapy arrange for the payments to be pro-rated with a physician in your new area.
  • Arrange a safe way to transfer your valuables including the content of your safe deposit box. DO NOT send them with your moving company. Either carry them with you or send them by insured or certified mail.
  • Arrange your insurance records and make sure all your policies will provide proper coverage for your new home.

  One week before your move:
     
  • Remove ice from sidewalks, driveways and steps to make the access to your home easier.
  • Make sure that all appliances such as lawn mowers, chainsaw and snow blowers are drained from gas. Gas grills and heaters should also be empty. If you plan to ship a car or motorcycle make sure they have no more than a quarter of a tank full.
  • Keep all receipts of your moving expenses for tax purposes.
  • Take off all draperies and hang them on hangers in your closet. The movers will place them in special wardrobe cartons when they pack the rest of your closet.
  • Put a set of linens and pillows in the dresser so you will have them handy on your first night at your new place.
  • Prepare a box with all the essentials you will need on your last day in your house and on the first day in your new house. This box will be loaded last to the truck and will be the first to come off it.
  • Defrost and clean your freezer and refrigerator at least a day before the move.

A day before your move:
     
  • If you hired a packing crew they will usually arrive a day before the actual loading of the van. Make sure you are there to supervise the packing.
  • Label each carton with the name of the room it will end up in the new house.
  • Make sure your fragile items are given special attention and packed safely.
  • Make arrangements to leave your house key with whomever necessary. Make sure you include all keys – mailbox, front gate, back gate, remote for parking space ext.
  • Notify the police if the house is going to be empty for a few days.

On the day of your move out:
     
  • Check the mover’s inventory list and take a copy of it. Make sure you both agree on the condition of your furniture. If there is a dispute or a doubt in your mind take pictures of the items.
  • Don’t let the truck leave before you checked every room of the house.
  • Don’t confuse the items and luggage you are taking with you and the ones going into the truck. If possible place the things you are taking with you in your car before the movers come.
  • Verify with your truck driver that he has the right direction to the new address and give him numbers in which to reach you in the new location or a cell phone if you have one.
  • Don’t sign the bill of lading before checking it. Keep a copy for your records.
  • Turn off water heaters and the thermostat before you leave.
Day of move in:
     
  • Get to your home before the movers do. There might be an extra charge if they will be forced to wait for you. Or if they have to wait for you for more then 2 hours they will place your property at a storage facility at your expense.
  • Unloading and taking inventory:

    2. Get the inventory sheets from the driver and ask the workers to call out the number of each box they carry into the house. Carefully check off every box that has been carried to the house. Make sure all boxes are checked off before you sign the inventory sheet for the driver. Once you sign it you are basically saying that everything has been delivered and from that moment on the moving company has no liability for any lost items claim.
    3. Write down on the inventory sheet all damage to your belonging before signing it. Once you checked everything and wrote all damages down on the inventory sheet call your moving company and inform them of the damages.

  • For an extra fee, moving companies will unpack your stuff for you and discard of all packing material. If not You will probably have to do some of the unpacking after the movers are gone make a note on the inventory sheet that says “Subject to inspection for concealed damage or loss of items” that way the moving company may still be liable in case you find missing or damaged items later.
  • Check carefully the condition of every piece of furniture and every box that is downloaded from the truck and compare it with your inventory list and photographs. If anything is missing or damaged make a note of it on the drivers inventory list before you sign it.
  • Check all appliances, water heaters and furnace. Contact the repair services immediately.
  • Don’t try to polish or repair any furniture that has been damaged. These actions usually just make the damage look older then it is making it easy for the moving company to claim it was not done by them.
  • Movers are not liable to damage done to items you packed on your own. That said, if you notice that one of the boxes you packed has been damaged on the outside – keep it. It will help you prove the box was handled poorly which caused the damage to the items inside.
